What do you mean by the "usual" places ?
It is certainly easier if you put things in the places Karl suggests.

do you mean you didn't know what "friends" meant ?

You know dvipsk is by the same guy (Karl Berry)
and follow exactly the same pattern ?
Well, the kpathsea in web2c-6.1 is older --
you can use the current kpathsea (as in dvipsk-5.58f)
by following the instructions in the patch web2c.kpathsea-2.6.help .
Maybe things would work out better that way ?
